The Caribbean Sea Project – Upcoming Exhibition Update

This week I am starting my piece for the exhibition, The Caribbean Sea Project.

I have decided to use this wall of the space:

???????????????????????????????

with approximate dimensions of 5.9m x 3m.

I have experimented with dulux tester paint pots in order to determine the correct colours to buy:

The above image which I am working from for this piece was taken from an image off the internet. I used Frank Fischers technique, using photoshop, of extracting only colour from an image by taking a one pixel line and stretching it out. The original image is below:

I am starting this tomorrow!

The Caribbean Sea Project – Upcoming Exhibition Update

For Critque Group a few weeks ago, (19.03.14), we were asked to create a small proposal for a project or future work we planned to create in response to our previous critque (whenever we showed our individual work to the group). Therefore, I proposed The Caribbean Sea Project for our upcoming exhibition, Arte Ederra presents Memorias.

In addition I had a small paragraph about the project which I had to say to the group:

This project is very different to the work I presented in Critque a few weeks ago, however both scale and enhancing the essence of the Cayman Islands have been considered.
As well as trying to find a balance between representation of a location, memory or emotion and abstraction.

My aim is to transport the viewer to the location I am represnting and to have them feel as though they may be standing in front of the Caymanian Sea on the beach.

Colour is powerful, and by simplifying imagery into just pure colour I think you can try to capture the essence of the image, memory or location.

I plan to start this project on Monday 24th March, and to finish by Saturday 29th March before my sister comes to visit.

Frank Fischer

Born in Switzerland, based in London.

“Frank Fischers gloss-on-aluminium paintings hits the viewer with a highly charged linear surface of reductionistic colour code, introducing a synthesis of technology, traditional study and a highly mastered process that challenges chance.”

Fischer chooses his work depending on their colour spectrum. They all come from another artists work, such as “White Canoe” by Peter Doig

Fischer takes a one pixel line scross the paintings in photoshop, to get every colour from that line, expands it and that turns it into a paintings.
His technique is dripping gloss household paints onto the surface and letting gravity do the rest, therefore his paintings have drips falling off the edge of the image.

Fischer’s way of working is very similar to mine. I am interested in extracting only colour from an image and in therory, so is he. However, I do not want to interfere with classical/famous paintings or other art images, I am rather interested only in memories, or location images.

I am going to try to use his method of extracting colour from an image for my exhibition piece.

David Hockney

I enjoy Hockney’s use of bold, bright colour within his works. I also admire their scale and content.

His works are inspiring to me and I find a connection of interest between mine and his works.

The way he works is by painting sections of a larger image onto smaller canvas and then putting them together for display, much like a jigsaw. I would like to try his way of montage painting one day soon.

The master at work! You can see the scale of his work from this image.

His work is exceptional and he is a very experienced artist.

One of my new favourite painters.

Upcoming Exhibition Update

Since my tutorial with Chloe, I have been working on creating three ocean images which show this location at three different times of the day; sunrise, mid-day and sunset. These will be created in the same way as my original idea;

Creating works of pure blocks/lines of colour whilst visualisting a location from a distance or capturing a memory. For these images I did not use visual aid, I only used my memory.

Below are sketchbook pages of colour experiments and perliminary drawings.

When these paintings are finished, I plan to use them as back up images for my Exhibition, in case my main idea doesn’t work.

Upcoming Exhibition Update

The other day,  (25.02.14) I had a tutorial with Chloe, where I asked her about how to insure my work and research is cohesive, but more importantly about my idea for the Exhibition (as explained in the pervious post, Upcoming Exhibition).

Basically, she advised me away from this idea because it was too literal, and to be honest I was more interested in another idea I’d been exploring at the time.

Over Christmas I had an idea to create paintings of just pure colour with an emotion or experience in mind. Originally thinking of this idea, I had my Norfolk park experience in mind.

Sketchbook page

Above is a scanned page of my sketchbook with original ideas, followed by a final painting of one of these sketches.

I found this idea to be quite successful, and so did Chloe. I had said this idea to Yuen as well, who also liked it and got quite excited about it! I think I got distracted with the other idea because of the painting workshop I’ve been going to, an idea which I plan to store away for another day.

With this idea I wanted to have aspects of the Caribbean as well, therefore I’ve been thinking about sunsets, sunrises, and particularly landscape/horizon images of the Cayman Islands.

I tried it first with just thinking about the ocean.

Chloe saw this piece, which originally I was going to fill in completely with colour, like I have in my sketchbook, however she said there is strength in the breaking of the colour. White space adds depth and perspective in the image and can force the eye to see a ‘distance’. The above piece is not the best example of this, because when I started it, that was not my intention.

I plan to do more of these. I do enjoy this more defined and specific way of working. I feel like, as an artist, I have more control over the outcome of what the piece will become. In addition, I’ve been working with acrylics, which I absolutely love working with.

Also, this work can progress so far and in lots of different ways but still sticking true to the original, basic idea.

Memories.
Emotions.
Experiences.
Locations.
Visualization from a distance.
