Jim Lambie

Jim Lambie was suggested to me because of his installation piece Zobop which can be installed anywhere than has a floor. Zobop involves laying down lines of vinyl tape in a space starting from the edges of the room and working its way in until all edges reach each other.

The 9 or 7 colours used within this piece are really attractive and their order is never the same, but chosen by the volunteers who lay it down.

His work inspires me to want to paint all the walls of a space, but has also inspired me to experiment with different materials such as tape.

In addition, Lambie films the laying down of the piece and time lapses it. This inspired me to do the same with The Caribbean Sea Project. By recording the process Lambie allows the viewer to see how much work is put into his pieces.

Frank Fischer

Born in Switzerland, based in London.

“Frank Fischers gloss-on-aluminium paintings hits the viewer with a highly charged linear surface of reductionistic colour code, introducing a synthesis of technology, traditional study and a highly mastered process that challenges chance.”

Fischer chooses his work depending on their colour spectrum. They all come from another artists work, such as “White Canoe” by Peter Doig

Fischer takes a one pixel line scross the paintings in photoshop, to get every colour from that line, expands it and that turns it into a paintings.
His technique is dripping gloss household paints onto the surface and letting gravity do the rest, therefore his paintings have drips falling off the edge of the image.

Fischer’s way of working is very similar to mine. I am interested in extracting only colour from an image and in therory, so is he. However, I do not want to interfere with classical/famous paintings or other art images, I am rather interested only in memories, or location images.

I am going to try to use his method of extracting colour from an image for my exhibition piece.

David Hockney

I enjoy Hockney’s use of bold, bright colour within his works. I also admire their scale and content.

His works are inspiring to me and I find a connection of interest between mine and his works.

The way he works is by painting sections of a larger image onto smaller canvas and then putting them together for display, much like a jigsaw. I would like to try his way of montage painting one day soon.

David Hockney - Scale
The master at work! You can see the scale of his work from this image.

His work is exceptional and he is a very experienced artist.

One of my new favourite painters.

The Miracle Tree

Artist John Newling speaks about his Moringa Oleifera Tree.
I saw his work originally at Nottingham Contemporary last year and absolutly love it. His slight engagement with science, mostly for his own interest, connects with my Art and Science Context module this year.

GÁBOR FÜLÖP

GÁBOR FÜLÖP

This artist was recommended to me in Crit a couple weeks ago. I am mostly interested in his Ladybug piece from 2010. This is a link to his website where you can see it.

This work touches on alot of similar ideas which i am currently exploring within my own work. The theme of ladybugs, at what point does a ladybug become threating (?), a swarm or overwhemling feeling of an insect usually thought of as under the halo effect.

Ladybug 2010 by GÁBOR FÜLÖP makes me feel like my skin is crawling, as though I am the one covered in bugs. I like it because it envokes emotion into the veiwer and succeeds in changing the ladybugs stereotype image.
